Gary Hewitt

Since leaving his senior management role in the engineering manufacturing sector in 2012, Gary has been involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

During his time working at three Birmingham inner city schools, he was responsible for raising the profile of the award and in 2022 he oversaw almost 400 participants to various stages of the award with a very successful pass rate, driving all sections of the award to their conclusion.

As well as his role of Duke of Edinburgh manager at two schools Gary has proved an integral part of the success of Big Strides Consultants. His retirement from school now enables him to devote his time and full commitment to Aspect Adventure. 

Laura Wilson

Laura has been working in the outdoor sector for over 25 years, she was part of the senior management team in Birmingham’s Outdoor Learning Service until 2014 when the service was closed down by BCC. 

Since then Laura has provided an independent service supporting D of E programmes for some of the most vulnerable young people in the City, working with the most difficult to reach groups as well as delivering mainstream outdoor provision. 

Laura is a member of the Outdoor Education Advisers Panel advising schools on off site visits across the west Midlands In addition, Laura is a highly qualified youth and outdoor practitioner, experienced and knowledgeable and has the best interests of young people at the heart of everything she does. Qualifications include PgDip Youth Work and Community Development, BA (Hons) Adventure Tourism Management, Mountain Leader, SPA, various BoF, D of E Supervisor/Assessor. Laura delivers training and is a course director for BEL, NNAS, OEAP OLC, OEAP EVC, OEAP EVL and OEAP MoVE training courses.

Jim Thompson

Jim’s love of the Outdoors has led to him working in the Outdoor industry for over 25 years, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award.  

As a qualified instructor in many Adventurous activities, he feels he has been lucky enough to combine his passion with his profession and pass on his enthusiasm for this environment.  

As a highly experienced and qualified Outdoor Practitioner and teacher, he has been involved in the development and facilitation of a wide range of programmes both skills based and therapeutic in nature.
